Remote Reground

barista at a Reground certified sustainable cafe collects ground coffee for recycling

Reground is partnering with not-for-profits and social enterprises in regional areas to reduce waste and increase resilience.

Based in Melbourne, Victoria, Reground is a certified social enterprise turning waste into a resource through collaborative practices rooted in community wellbeing.

To date, Reground has diverted over 1,480,000 kilos of ground coffee away from landfill; in the process, the Reground community has prevented over 3,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Reground’s hyper-local recycling model has enriched over 700 community gardens and urban farmers and supported over 500 organisations to connect more deeply with their communities.

  • Reground is a certified social enterprise working on innovative waste, recycling and sustainability projects that benefit the community and the environment.

Reground was founded when Ninna, a barista, identified that Melbourne’s cafes were sending ground coffee (a rich organic resource) to landfill. In landfill, not only do the rich nutrients in coffee go to waste, but it produces high levels of methane (a harmful greenhouse gas.) Ninna resolved to collect the coffee and deliver it to the nearest Community Garden instead, where it could be composted.

By choosing to put ground coffee back into the soil (instead of in landfill) we are reducing emissions while also supporting soil health and community wellbeing.

  • Reground’s mission has always been to create the biggest positive impact - and benefit as many people - as efficiently as we can.

We have created Remote Reground as a way to extend our services to support more people in a way that directly benefits the local community as much as possible.

We’ll do this by partnering with existing Social Enterprises and Not For Profits in regional Victoria and providing them with the tools and skills to set up coffee recycling in their own area.

The Remote Reground model is designed to not only respect local knowledge and organisations but to be a way for them to add revenue, create jobs and stability - all while we divert waste from landfill!

  • Reground’s regional partners will be guided through all of software, systems and training that help us run a wildly successful recycling service.

We’ll help partners with everything they need to get set up and support them once they’re up and running and they’ll have access to the expertise (and enthusiasm!) of our whole team.

  • Cafes (and restaurants and offices and so on) in regional hubs can sign up for the recycling service. We’ll provide a collection bin for you to empty your knockbox into and we’ll collect it when it’s full and deliver the coffee to a nearby gardener who can put it to good use.

We keep the costs of our service low so it is accessible - in most cases, it is not only more environmentally and socially responsible to recycle your coffee but it’s cheaper, too.

  • Home and community gardeners, landscapers, farmers, landcare groups and the like can sign up for a free delivery of ground coffee.

Coffee is naturally rich in nitrogen and potassium and provides a great boost to compost and soil regeneration.

In addition, coffee has been shown to deter pests and suppress weeds.

Best of all, using it in your garden prevents it from being sent to landfill, where all of that goodness goes to waste.

  • Reground is a certified Social Enterprise, meaning that we are driven by social and environmental values and that we invest the majority of our organisation’s profits back into community wellbeing.

As we confirm the first regional centres to get access to this program, we’ll add them to the dropdown list. If your area isn’t shown, please send us your details anyway - once we get the first round of expansion up and running we’ll be looking to decide which areas should be next.
