Ground coffee collection for cafes, coffee roasters, businesses and offices of any size

You’ve started considering your waste as a resource, and you’re almost part of a circular economy – fantastic!

As of March 2024, our community of cafes, coffee roasters and offices has helped us save over 1.5 million kilograms of ground coffee from going to landfill.

That’s more than 40 million lattes.

Sending ground coffee to landfill is a serious problem - when organic matter breaks down in landfill it produces methane, a greenhouse gas more than 28 times as harmful as carbon dioxide; it also wastes the myriad useful nutrients that ground coffee contains.

Reground rescues coffee waste and delivers it free of charge to community gardens and local gardeners, where the juicy nutrients go back into the soil, contributing to soil health and ecological resilience while supporting local gardeners to grow healthy food.

How does coffee collection work?

We provide you with a unique bin that makes it super-simple to empty your knockbox. We’ll start you on a trial so we can assess your collection needs and you can experience the simplicity of our service.

You and your customers will be proud to see the Reground collection van out the front (no dark-of-night waste collection here!)

How can Reground support my business’ Environment, Sustainability and Governance goals?

We record each collection and the positive end-point to which it goes. We make all of the data we collect freely available to our collection partners via our Impact Report, an online portal that shows your diversion data and positive environmental impact in real-time. We also send monthly Impact updates by email so that you can track, record and share the good work we are doing together.

“Reground speaks for itself...we do have a lot of waste that we need to keep up with. The first side of things is obviously the coffee waste and a lot of our customers swear by and use Reground...we’re doing everything we can to mitigate that waste through you guys.”

What happens to the coffee grounds?

Community gardens and home gardeners can request full van loads of coffee grounds free of charge delivered straight to their door.

Coffee grounds make an excellent addition to compost and worm farms, being full of delicious and important nutrients. We’re also seeing new and exciting uses for coffee grounds like mushroom growing and building materials. There are endless possibilities!

You can find out more about coffee ground distribution and uses here.

Why don’t we want coffee in landfill?

If you’re a cafe going through 20 kg of beans each week you are responsible for sending 2 tonnes of coffee to landfill every year. In landfill, that two tonnes of ground coffee will emit nearly 4 tonnes of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere.

By keeping coffee out of landfill you can help us create circular solutions.

Why is there a fee?

Businesses pay for waste collection regardless of where it goes, so redirecting funds and resources to the local community isn’t a hard choice.

Reground is a social enterprise — when cafes and offices decide to work with Reground, they know that they’re investing in the future of healthy, collaborative communities and supporting a movement that benefits all, not just a select few.

“...If you’re wanting to step into [coffee] you’ve got to do whatever you can to give back. It’s important. One of our biggest values within this space is working with the community, so as soon as we heard about Reground, we were on straight away.”
