Put ground coffee and chaff back into your soil

Get free ground coffee and chaff for your home, school or community garden and help divert valuable organic resources from landfill.

Every year, Australia produces an estimated 75,000 tonnes of ground coffee waste.

The majority of this goes directly to landfill, where it contributes significantly to climate change through the production of methane – a greenhouse gas 34 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

By using ground coffee and chaff in your garden, you are diverting this waste from landfill and simultaneously providing a sustainable source of nutrients to your plants.

Using coffee and chaff in your garden

We provide collected ground coffee and chaff free of charge to community gardens and home gardeners within approximately 30 km of our HQ in Alphington, Victoria - as well as in regional Victoria through our Remote Reground partners.

Compost

Composting ground coffee and chaff will produce a natural fertiliser that can improve soil’s water-holding capacity and promote plant growth, particularly in green vegetables. To promote optimal microorganism growth, the ideal proportion of ground coffee in your compost pile is around 20%.

Soil Health

Healthy, nutritious soil is essential to the production of good food as well as to the health of plants, insects and animals - all of whom are, in turn, essential to human health! Declining soil health is a serious issue, exacerbated by the disposal of organic matter in landfill, where it goes to waste.
Returning nutritious organic matter to the soil instead - where it can break down naturally and enrich the earth - is a simple and easily attainable way that we can tackle soil health at a local level. Improving soil health locally means more people will be able to grow and share healthy fresh food for their community.

Worm Farms

Worms love ground coffee and provide a beneficial service to us by breaking it down and turning it into a natural soil conditioner. Alongside other food scraps in your worm farm, the ground coffee decomposes and produces worm castings which can aid germination and act as a liquid fertiliser when diluted with water.
